Are you surprised to hear there's a Celebrity Scarves book series or that Kate Moss was given her first knitting kit by her husband?

Many ‘regular’ people enjoy crafting but as you start looking at famous people, you’ll find that a lot of them also enjoy crocheting or knitting. Or, in the case of former professional football player Rosey Greer - crocheting, knitting and needlepoint! Greer is often credited with “allowing” men to participate in these crafts and showing that they’re not just for women. He even wrote a popular book in the 1970’s called Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men.

“I like to do interior design, I love to quilt, I love to see different colors together, and I love to match things up.” – singer Mary J. Blige

While there aren’t a lot of studies, crafters have often said that the act of working with their needles and hooks helps them relax.   Actor Ryan Gossling (who is the star of many a crafting meme) has said “I did this scene in 'Lars and the Real Girl' where I was in a room full of old ladies who were knitting, and it was an all-day scene, so they showed me how. It was one of the most relaxing days of my life.” Some doctors are seeing how knitting and crafting helps relax their patients and how it can help with anxiety.

"Knitting is my favorite hobby . . . sometimes I really challenge myself!” – actress Julia Roberts

According to the Craft Yarn Council, 38 million people enjoy crocheting and knitting. And based on one of their studies, 28% of those are under the age of 45, which means that these crafts are still popular and will remain so for a long time.  So if you’ve considered following in some famous footsteps and are ready to learn how to knit or crochet, go for it! There are clubs around the country in churches and local stores teaching people of all ages how to begin. Both Michael’s and Jo-Ann Fabric offer classes in select stores as well. And if you already love to crochet or knit, let us know in the comments why you love these crafts so much.
