2012 is looking bright

The change is coming. Are you ready? Do you know what I’m talking about? 2012! It's probably not the end of the world for us, but it is for old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs, thanks to the Energy Independence Security Act of 2007 (EISA).

The EISA's stated purpose is “to move the United States toward greater energy independence and security, to increase the production of clean, renewable fuels, to protect consumers, to increase the efficiency of products, [emphasis added] buildings, and vehicles, to promote research on and deploy greenhouse gas capture and storage options, and to improve the energy performance of the Federal Government, and for other purposes.” But what the heck does that mean? Well, it means a lot of things, but let's focus on what it means for your light bulbs.

One of the key provision of the product efficiency goal is to phase out incandescent light bulbs. Specialty bulbs, such as colored, 3-way, and appliance bulbs are exempt from the regulations. Don’t worry, your Easy Bake Oven bulb is safe.

Plant lights are also exempt, but why not check out our specialty Plant Growth lamps and bulbs anyway?

Why the hate for incandescent bulbs? Has the government got something against Thomas Edison? No way! It’s about making our world cleaner and your energy bill smaller. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL), like the ones you find at OttLite, are way more efficient than traditional light bulbs, using about 75% less energy. All that unused energy means a lower power bill for you!

In fact, CFL bulbs are so efficient they already meet or exceed the 2007 EISA requirements. OttLite customers alone have helped to prevent over 3 billion pounds of CO2 emissions from being belched into our atmosphere. That’s the equivalent carbon dioxide reduction of taking 314 cars off the road. Imagine how that would ease the morning commute!

Sadly, this is only a hypothetical illustration.

And they’re cool. I’m not just talking about their fun, swirly shape either (though we all think the swirl is pretty rad). I’m talking about the fact that CFLs are actually cooler than standard bulbs, so they’re safer in your home and could save you a little extra in cooling costs. That’s not just cool; that’s awesome!

For those keeping score at home, that's CFL bulbs 3, Standard Incandescent 0. And only OttLite bulbs get a bonus point for Sunny Goodness. That’s because only our bulbs have superior 508 Illumination technology, giving you clear details, true-to-life colors, and less glare. See the difference for yourself here.

("Loser" sounds impolite.)

The real winner, though, is you. You’ll save money and help save the world, just by changing a light bulb. Break out your Easy Bake Oven and celebrate!
