Snow Kitten Mittens from The Crochet Dude

Is there anything you can’t do with crochet? The Crochet Dude® shows us time and again that the answer is No. Check out these gorgeous crocheted mittens that mimic Scottish fair-isle by using a simple color-changing technique.

Abbreviations:

beg = beginning, bpdc = back post double crochet, ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, fpdc = front post double crochet, PM = place marker, post2tog = post stitch 2 together, Rnd = round, RS = right side, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, st(s) = stitch(es), yo = yarn over



Special Stitches:

  • Foundation Double Crochet (foundation dc): » Ch 4, (counts as your first foundation dc) yo, insert hook into 4th chain from the hook, yo pull through, ch 1 (i.e. yo, draw hook through one loop), (yo, draw hook through 2 loops) twice. Your second foundation dc made.?» *Yo, insert hook into the ch stitch that you made while doing the previous foundation dc. Yo, pull through, ch 1, (yo, draw hook through 2 loops) twice.?» Repeat from * for as many more foundation dcs that you need.

  • Front post double crochet (fpdc): » Yo, insert your hook around the post of the stitch below, going from the front of the fabric around the back of the stitch and through to the front, yo and pull through. (Yo and pull through 2 loops) twice.

  • Back post double crochet (bpdc): » Yo, insert your hook around the post of the stitch below, going from the back of the fabric around the front of the stitch and through the back, yo and pull through. (Yo and pull through 2 loops) twice.

  • Post stitch 2 together (post2tog): » Yo, insert hook as if to work a post stitch around next st, pull up loop, yo pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, insert hook as if to work a post stitch around following st, pull up loop, yo pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.




Notes:

  • Ch 2 at beginning of row or round counts as a post st, unless otherwise noted.

  • Hdc at end of row or round counts as a post st, unless otherwise noted.

  • When changing colors do not fasten off old color. Carry old color up on the inside of the project and join where indicated.

  • You will be working on the RS of the mittens.




Gauge Stitch Pattern:

Row 1: work 33 foundation dc (see Special Stitches), turn.?Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first post st), fpdc around next st, [bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st] repeat across, ending with hdc (counts as a post st) in last st, turn. (33 post sts)?Row 3: Ch 2, [bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st] repeat across, ending with hdc in last st, turn.?Rows 4-11: Repeat Rows 2-3, 4 times. At the end of Row 11, end off. Measure your gauge in the center of the swatch.



Directions

Starting at cuff with brown:

Rnd 1: Leaving a long tail, work 52 foundation dc, sl st to top of 1st st to join in the rnd, do not turn.?Note: From now on, do not join rnds unless instructed. PM at end of ea row to indicate last st.?Rnds 2-11 (RS): [bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st] repeat around.

Continue to change color at the end of ea rnd and work as follows:

Rnd 12: With blue [bpdc around next st , fpdc around next st] repeat around.?Rnd 13: With brown [bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st] repeat around.?Rnds 14-21: Repeat Rnds 12-13, 4 times.



Create Thumbhole:

Rnd 14: With blue, bpdc around next st, work 12 foundation dc, working the first one into the top of the st you just worked around, skip 12 sts on previous rnd, fpdc around next st. Continue in pattern as established.?Rnd 15: With brown, [bpdc around in next st, fpdc around next st] repeat around.?Rnds 16-27: Repeat Rnds 12-13, 7 times.?Rnd 28: Repeat Rnd 12.?Rnd 29: [post2tog around next 2 sts] repeat around, join with sl st to 1st st of previous rnd. Fasten off, leaving long tail. (26 sts)

Turn mitten inside out and with long tail and yarn needle, weave tail in and out of sts of Rnd 29, cinch tightly and secure. Weave in remaining end.



Thumb:

Rnd 1: With RS facing, attach brown with a sl st to corner just before first skipped st, ch 2, work in bpdc, fpdc ribbing across, work 2 dc in corner. Working across foundation sts at top of thumbhole, work in bpdc, fpdc ribbing across, work 1 more dc in corner, do not join. (28 sts)?Rnds 2-7: [fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st] repeat around.?Rnd 8: [post2tog around next 2 sts] repeat around, join with sl st to 1st st of previous rnd. Fasten off, leaving long tail. (14 sts)

Turn mitten inside out and with long tail and yarn needle weave in and out of sts of Rnd 8 of thumb, cinch tightly and secure. Weave in remaining end.



Finishing

Turn mitten inside out. Use the long tail from Rnd 1 of mitten to sew the small seam created at the beginning of the pattern. Weave in all ends.
