When fellow OttLife Blogger Autumn asked me to create an Arabian Nights-themed card to celebrate her anniversary with her boyfriend, I was extremely flattered. It was a project with a challenge that I looked forward to.The theme was inspired by the middle-eastern part of Nick's heritage. Autumn used a Pinterest board to share some images that inspired her, then we got together so I could ask her some questions and get a better feel for the project. I gathered some samples of the new handmade

Since buying my die cut machine I’ve been re-invigorated to keep creating cards. Knowing that I wanted one of my next cards to feature a seahorse theme, I headed out to take advantage of a great craft store sale and fill the gaps in my cache of materials. Having the seahorse in mind, I was excited when I came across a collection of colored jewels. The way they were arranged in the packaging, and the varying sizes and aquatic colors, were a natural inspiration for undersea bubbles. When creating

Summer is fast approaching! Some of my dearest summer vacation memories are of the annual road trips my mother and I took together. We drove from Florida to Vermont to spend a week with my grandparents. We delighted in small towns, back roads, and all the adventures a good road trip can bring. I used to tape postcards of each state into my journal and kept a detailed log of what roads we took, where we ate and shopped, and what sights we saw. When I saw this project on Dollar Store Crafts, I was

This accordion-style Mother's Day card was adapted from an article by Gretchen Goetz, Arts and Crafts Examiner for Examiner.com.Because I was creating this card for my mother, the butterflies and color scheme came easily. She was thrilled with the last card I gave her so I looked to it for inspiration. Like that card, the artwork in this card was primarily created with rubber stamps and colored pencil. I also die cut some custom shapes and used similar embellishments as before. The Examiner.com

Excited just barely describes how I felt while I waited for UPS to deliver my new die cutting machine. I had seen infomercials on TV and passed various machines in the craft stores. I thought they looked like a lot of fun but I didn't buy one for years. I finally bought one after I started seeing so many beautifully designed handmade cards that were elevated to a whole new level by the cleanness of their construction thanks to die cutting machines.Being an artist and a natural with computers and

I absolutely love rubber stamps and colored pencil. They can serve as an excellent cheat when I don't have time to create an original drawing. Rubber stamps can also come in handy when you want to create a series of color variations. For the card featured in this post I went for the colored pencils, blending pens and added some glitter accents.Once I finished the artwork and the glue holding the glitter was completely dry, I used edging scissors to trim it and the accent color papers I chose to

Why wait until next Valentine's Day to tell someone you think they're sweet? Tell them any time with this cupcake-themed card. The color scheme for this project was really driven by the envelope I selected. I made sure to use my OttLite Folding Task Lamp ***shameless plug*** when selecting the card stock so that all of the colors were complimentary. After I established the size of the card and cut the window opening for the cupcake drawing, I traced the window size onto my drawing paper. Then I

When was the last time you wrote a letter? Not email, not an IM, not a Facebook wall post. I mean a real, tactile, pen-and-paper letter? The art of the personal letter used to be taught to young boys and girls in grammar school—now it’s about as common as making macramé hanging baskets for indoor plants. Which is a real shame, because who doesn’t love getting a letter in the mail? And really, don’t you think the postman gets bored of delivering Valu-Paks and cable bills? I would. With those
